CAD CAM Engine Turning Style
Using engine turning to represent different cultural styles

More Style Ideas

How we developed the use of Design Style with CAD CAM Further.

More and more ideas for this range of pens were created. Some were extremely simple, as with the Israeli pen, others were far more complex and even cut more deeply with finer cutting, as with the Bassano Millennium Pen. On this page the prices, based on 2005 price levels, are more variable than the previous one.

We also moved, in some cases, away from the idea of just using a national or ethnic style in the design, to allow more freedom for the designer to be creative with engine turning as a design medium.

Israeli Pen

Isreali Pen
A pen designed for Israel. The CAD drawing for this pen was quite simple to produce and cost about £500 UKP, with a production price on a total edition of 1000, run about 250 at a time, at just over £17 UKP each.

Bassano Del Grappa Millennuim Pen

Bassano Millennuim Pen
This pen, richly decorated with images and heraldry from the Town of Bassano Del Grappa, the location since 1912 of Montegrappa, this pen was produced in 1998 in celebration of 1,000 years since the founding of the city. The famous bridge over the river is seen portrayed twice on the body of the pen, emblems such as grapes, representing the famous liqueur called Grappa and the Lion of Venice are also included in this pen which was cut more densely than the usual 192 cuts per tube at 240 cuts, to allow greater depth and definition. 998 pens were produced in two runs of approximately 500 at a current price of about £23 UKP per pen.

A Russian Pen

Russian Pen
This design by David Pledge was based closely upon the rich decoration in the wall paper of the famous Golden Room of the Kremlin in Moscow. Unit price about £18 UKP per pen for two batches of 500. It is a beautiful example of the rich style of decoration possible using our CAD CAM engine turning system.

The Rhine Journey

Rhine Journey Pen
"Given the task of designing a German pen for the Cosmopolitan range I was somewhat daunted by the difficulties of designing a pen without ending up either with crude cliches or making some kind of political faux pas. Then an idea came to me, inspired partly by Escher, the dutch artist. I created an almost surrealist design that represented a journey down Germany's great river, from the top of the pen in the south, past the Black Forest, the vineyards and the finally fields to the north. Each image flows into the next in a seamless collage of metamorphosing ideas."
The unit price was about £19 UKP per pen with an edition of 1,000.

Gaudì

Gaudì Pen
This pen, designed by David Pledge, was the result of a brief to produce an art nouveau pen based upon the work of Antoni Gaudì, using the Casa Millà in Barcellona for the subject material.

Yet again this design shows just how hugely versatile this process is in the hands of a capable designer who understands it.

About 1,000 pens were produced with a unit price of about £18 UKP per pen.

Aboriginal Australian

Created with inspiration from images from the native artists of Australia. Both cap and body are engine turned as with the other Cosmopolitan pens. Unit price is about £18 UKP per pen.
