Engine Turning over 3D Shapes

The flexibility offered by using a guide to follow the surface means that unlike other machining processes which require precise geometric accuracy, engine turning can be done on absolutely any convex surface.

Milestone Clock
This vitreous enamelled silver "milestone" clock, engine turned with diagonal stripes, was cut in tiny segments over the curved top and joined carefully with the flat sides to end up geometrically correct. We still have the paper rubbing we took after completing the engine turning, before the enamel was fired on, which looks as if we did the whole job flat! A testimony to accurate measurement and the finest skilled engine turning in the world, we had this on the front page of our site for about five years! Most of what you see is our work apart from the construction, the stunningly good enamel, the hands and the glass. (Courtesy Clive Burr).
