The Illustrated Engine Turning Reference™

Technical Reference
AN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FOR STUDENTS, USERS AND PRACTITIONERS

This Technical Reference is for designers using engine turning as well as for engine turners themselves.

Introduction

This part of our online Reference Book contains all the technical data you need as a customer, as well as helpful information for practising engine turners and students and apprentices studying the craft.

We have set out, in part one, the information for designers and users of our services first, followed by the more detailed notes for engine turning craftsmen in part two.

The detailed technical notes for craftsmen will be added to as time premits. Our first priority is to service our customers. If you have experience as an engine turner, we encourage you to share your knowledge as we are doing for the benefit of all, and in the interests of helping to preserve this unique craft. You can upload your information using our feedback page.

Preserving Knowledge: What we bequeath to the future

As mentioned in the introduction to this reference work, our intention is to try to preserve all the knowledge we have gained and inherited over so many years.

A civilization consists of many parts. Some of those parts are the various skills and technologies that the civilization has engendered. Preserving and recording that knowledge is a fundamental part of civilization. If we fail to do this, the knowledge will be lost, just as the ancient Etruscan art of Granulation was lost many centuries ago and has never been recovered to the same level of skill and quality that existed so long ago. I personally wrote a dissertation on the subject of Granulation as a young student in 1975, a copy of which is in the Sir John Cass School of Art Library, London. Our intention is to try to record everything we know about the craft of Engine Turning so that future generations will be able to keep it alive, and we invite all craftsmen to assist and add to this knowledge base.
